Do-It-Yourself stores in Bulgaria have braced up for expansion, an effort replicating the moves of food and consumer goods retailers. Praktiker of Germany announced it will open a new store in Pleven, northern Bulgaria. The complex will also be home to Bulgarias second-largest electronics and household appliances chain Technomarket and Austrias food retailer, Billa.
To date, Praktiker has established two outlets in Sofia and one each in Varna and Plovdiv.
Early this week, another home improvement chain, Austrias bauMAX, announced it would unveil its first Bulgarian store in 2008. Expansion to Bulgaria forms part of a strategy to establish 10 stores in Romania, Croatia and Slovenia as well. All stores will cost EUR 10 million each and are slated to be operational within two years.
The first DIY retailer to step on Bulgarian market, Mr.Bricolage of France, echoed rivals plans by saying it would build another 5 stores next year and thus will double its retail network, covering the countrys largest cities.
