Austrian utility EVN is the best bidder for Macedonian thermal power plant TEC Negotino, offering EUR 4 million for the company and pledging to invest 752 million in it over the next five years, EVN spokesman Stefan Zach said.

EVN is interested in production capacities for hydro and thermal energy in the region, Zach told Austrian APA news agency. The company plans to upgrade the existing thermal power plant and to operate it together with a hydroelectric power plant, which is to be constructed.

EVNs competitor, Austrian Verbund also took part in the bidding, offering EUR 480 million in investments, which ranked the company at the fourth place, Macedonian media reported.

The final decision on the deal is expected after the general election in Macedonia on July 5th, 2006. In the spring of 2006, EVN acquired 90 per cent in Macedonian electricity distribution company Elektrostopanstvo Na Makedonija (ESM) for EUR 225 million.
